Christmas jobs can benefit your career

Ho, ho, ho! Or not. Many of us don’t have too much to laugh about at the moment, what with inflation sky-rocketing and all of our wallets feeling that much lighter this year. Still, this is actually a great time of the year for the jobs market as companies look to hire in hundreds or even thousands of additional seasonal workers. And these jobs can do a lot more than just boost your finances for a few months!

Plug the gaps on your CV

You don’t have to read the papers to know that the UK has been in real economic strive in recent months. Beyond that, the global economy has also been taking a bit of a battering of late. Still, the good news is that Christmas – and the post-Christmas sales season – gets people spending, and this is something the government has desperately been trying to get us all to do in order to boost the economy and save businesses struggling to make ends meet. And so, jobs are created.

But what does all this mean for you? Well, for a start, if you’ve been struggling to find a job recently then you have more chance of getting a seasonal job, which will help to plug the gap on your CV. Employers don’t like to see long gaps of unemployment on CVs and by getting a temporary job over the holidays you’ll be able to show that you’ve been proactive and are a go-getter – something all companies look for.

Network

Once you get a Christmas job or seasonal job then you’ll be meeting lots of new people – from your manager through to new colleagues. And this gives you a great opportunity to make some contacts. Look on this as more than just a money-making opportunity. My getting to know lots of new people you’ll be able to call on them for everything from a professional reference at your next job through to possible new job opportunities in the future.

Prove yourself

And that’s where proving yourself comes in. Everyone remembers a hard worker and a friendly colleague, and when it comes to a more permanent role coming up in the future then you’re likely to be the first person to pop into their minds. Prove yourself in a Christmas job and you never know where it might lead longer-term!

Transferable skills

If you’re just looking at making some extra cash for Christmas and aren’t interested in pursuing a longer-term career in retail, logistics and delivery or similar then don’t forget that you can use transferable skills learned from these jobs on your CV to highlight to companies in other industries that you’re a good all-round employee. These skills include communication (hello?), numeracy (1,2,3), literacy (A,B,C), time keeping (late? Never!) and even management if you have worked in a supervisory role. These are all appealing to employers of any industry.

Big company, big prospects

Another bonus of a seasonal job is if you work for a well-known brand or company – anyone from the Big 4 supermarkets (Sainsbury’s, Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons) to well-known restaurant groups – as this will look good on your CV. Employers look kindly on people that can thrive in competitive and successful businesses. And anything that makes it more likely that you’ll end up on the “˜Yes’ pile instead of the “˜No’ pile can’t be bad, right?
