Why not consider the opportunities available in the Army and the wealth of different careers it offers?

With training and development opportunities second to none, the Army can offer a short or long term career filled with the variety and challenge to help students reach their full potential.

The Army gives school-leavers the chance to develop their skills, gain access to apprenticeships and gain well earned qualifications such as NVQs, BTECs and even degrees, in their chosen field. Joining the Army also offers the chance to travel, enjoy an active lifestyle and meet people from all walks of life as well as a benefits package that includes a starting salary of over £260 per week, six weeks paid holiday, subsidised accommodation, free health and dental care, sport facilities and a pension.

Army recruits can join full time as Regular soldiers or in their spare time as members of the Territorial Army. They can join for as little as four years and can enjoy a wide range of over 140 different career paths from Para to Pilot, Clerk to Combat Soldier, Dog Handler to Driver , Chef to Signaller or Bricklayer to Bomb Disposal.

Further Education Bursaries

For school leavers who have a number of concerns regarding their path through further education, such as how to finance full-time study and whether they will be able to secure a job once their student days are over. The Army has a Further Education (FE) Bursary scheme designed to help students who may wish to consider joining as a soldier.

The FE bursary scheme pays you £1000 a year while you study at college. When you finish your course, there is a guaranteed job waiting for you as well as an extra £1000 after you complete the course. It doesn’t matter which subject you study and you don’t have to choose an army job similar to the course, but with over 140 different roles available, it is easy to find a way to use what you’ve learned. When you join you’ll get extra training and the chance to pick up vocational qualifications.

Army Officer

Students passing on to A-levels or degrees may be eligible for a career as an Army Officer. Becoming an Officer is as much about qualities as qualifications and an appetite for responsibility, and the ability to lead and motivate others are two of the key attributes required. The Army treats each candidate as an individual and looks at the broad range of skills and experience they can offer. Officers train at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where they can develop the skills to command and will, at an early stage, be responsible for around 30 soldiers together. If you don’t have a degree you’ll earn a salary of £15,824 while you train which rises to £24,615 when you are commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. As a graduate you start training on £24,615 and will earn at least £29,587 afterwards and a benefits package including six weeks paid holiday, subsidised accommodation, free health and dental care, sport facilities and a pension.
