Decisions, decisions, decisions!

We asked our icould Facebook friends to write an article to let us know what they’re up to or what’s worrying them at the moment. Josh Littlefair starts us off by giving us his views on choosing a university…

Hello everyone. I’m Joshua and I am currently studying for my AS levels in Kent – that means a lot of revision right now! I am taking four AS levels; Geography, Government and Politics, Economics and English Literature and next year I plan on dropping English Literature and studying the remaining three subjects for A2 levels.

Once I have finished education I aim to secure a Scholarship and subsequently take a gap year where I will undertake paid work and also volunteer in deprived areas, possibly overseas. After this, I will then return to higher education.

Deciding on which university is right for you can be difficult. I know how cliché that sounds. But there are one hundred and thirty three members of Universities UK – not to mention the possibility of studying overseas. France and Germany boast impressive universities which are internationally recognised and, with the increase in tuition fees, overseas options certainly seem a lot more appealing.

Personally, I am looking into politics and economics based degrees. The two courses I most like the look of are Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and Philosophy and Politics. These courses appeal to me because they allow for a broad range of topics to be studied as part of the course. For example, the University of East Anglia offers modules entitled “˜The Rationalists’, “˜Public Choice’ and “˜Knowledge and Perception’ all within PPE (all of which personally appeal to me).

Conversely, some universities, for example the University of Nottingham, do not offer PPE. The availability of some courses is more limited than others and this needs to be addressed when considering universities. Do not do what I did to begin with and assume all universities facilitate every course!

I will be visiting both Warwick and Nottingham universities in the next few months, with a visit to Bristol, UEA and Exeter in the pipeline and, once I have, I will report back on what I found out.

See you soon, Josh.
