Christmas can be a very stressful time for many of us – particularly when families or young children are involved. Santa Claus apparently hasn’t been affected by the global economic downturn!

Luckily, this is the time of the year when the job market goes into overdrive with a flurry of seasonal jobs that many respected businesses need to fill. Totaljobs.com explains why this could be your chance to earn some extra Christmas cash!

Retailers ready for shoppers

This is the most obvious area of growth over Christmas as shops see sharp rises in online and in-store visitors and need to cope with the extra demand on their staff time. For example, Sainsbury’s needs another 15,000 workers, Debenhams have announced an additional 10,000 staff roles, Marks and Spencer are looking to expand their workforce by 15,000, Asda will take on 7,000 extra staff, Boots needs a further 7,000 people and Argos are looking for another 12,000 seasonal helpers. That is a LOT of jobs… and that’s only the beginning!

Eat, drink and be merry

We all like to stuff our faces and enjoy the occasional tipple over the Christmas party period, so it’s no surprise that the hospitality industry will also see a big boost in jobs over the holidays as more staff are needed to cope with demand. Also bear in mind that some venues stay open over the Bank Holidays (Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day) then you may be entitled to time and a half or double time rates of pay. People are also likely to be more generous with tips at this time of the year!

As well as front-of-house jobs there are also lots of behind the scenes roles for people who just can’t be dealing with the constant demands of hordes of customers. Everything from transport and logistics jobs through to warehouse jobs are covered and many of these require little in the way of previous experience or specific skills.

Santa Claus is coming to town…

It may not have always been your career dream but, yes, there are santa and elves jobs available this time of the year. Cringing right now? Well, actually, they can be pretty rewarding as – despite the occasional scared kid – most children will be very happy to see you, even if you are laden down by a fat suit and a big furry beard. Just be careful what you promise them – the pained expressions of mum and dad should be enough to tell you whether a child’s X-box shaped dream is likely to become reality or not!
