0:00:02 Hello. I'm Anna Hirst and I'm working for Humber VHB and I'm an apprentice engineer. Generally, I just train to be site maintenance and because there's lots of machines and everything I get trained like, to fix them when they break down and general site maintenance really. In the food packaging area there's food-packaging machines where they wrap salad and herbs and everything into packages and trays.

00:00:34 All them need maintaining and when they break they need fixing. So, when I was little I didn't really know what I wanted to do but then like, when I started going to classes in high school I found that I, I just chose which ones I preferred and went with that. And because I did electronics at school it made me want to go into that more.

00:00:59 And because my dad was an engineer and I did work experience there, it all just seemed to sink in to wanna make me think I might be an engineer. I did think that there was going to be quite a few male engineers, not many female, but I think if you wanna do something just set your mind to it and then you'll fit in. The first time I probably thought about becoming an engineer was when we was doing work experience in school. I got put onto an experience of doing aircraft like, manufacturing, putting in wiring circuits and panels on the planes and everything.

00:01:39 So, after I'd gone to there, I don't know it just kind of made me think I could do this for a living. I've been brought up by my dad. He's always said, if you want something just go for it. And because he's an engineer and he's been through a lot of what I've been through - a lot of what I'm going through, he encouraged me told me that it's a good job to get into. There's loads of different stuff you can do with engineering.

00:02:07 You're not just limited to doing one thing. If, if you got the knowledge then you can go and do anything you want. It appealed to me because I felt that I'd prefer to work and learn at the same time instead of stay at college, do all, all that and then get a job. I'd prefer to go get a job and learn while I'm working. I think it's the best way of doing it.

00:02:31 I don't know, you get an experience of how work works. Like, you don't just - you aren't confined to one room everyday doing the same thing. You get, you get to go out there and go different places, meet different people and do different jobs. When I first started off secondary school I used to enjoy doing drama and I chose it as a GCSE option because I liked it that much and I ended up doing shows for my school.

00:03:00 I did consider going into acting but because I was considering engineering as well. It was a balance of which I enjoyed more which I, I preferred engineering. So, I just chose that route. My plan from now on is to finish my class, become a fully qualified electrical engineer and then go on to do a HNC foundation degree in what I'm doing now and then become even more qualified and just become successful.
