00:00:03 My name is Karen Johnson, I'm studying Homeopathy. I am at the moment a Student Practitioner, and I'm in my third year. We learn all about pathology and disease, we learn symptom pictures of diseases, and we also learn the different remedies. Where the different remedies come from, where they're made, how they're made. I have about another two years to study to complete my fourth year, and then my Post Grad course, I really want to specialise in Paediatrics. So that's another year. So about another three years to go. But at the moment I am a Student Practitioner, so I am actually involved with a Student Clinic here, which is really interesting. So it brings all my studies alive now so - so that's really, really good.
00:00:57 I think now I'm understanding the principles of Homeopathy - and I've always instinctively been drawn to alternative therapies, and complementary therapies. I think that probably stems from my mother, and my grandmother as well, who were very interested in alternative therapies, and I'm sure years ago they would have been drowned as a witch or something. But I think that's - in that household, the household that I grew up, we always looked to alternative stuff, as opposed to a bottle of pills.
00:01:37 I left school actually with very few qualifications. I'm not sure why that was, I don't think I applied myself when I was at school - as much as I should have done. I was more into creative stuff, I really wanted to leave. That's when I really wanted to learn how to sew, and to create garments. And so I did that for a short while. And then I didn't - I got married quite early - briefly - and had my daughter, so I didn't really do anything after that, apart from bringing her up. I actually taught her at home. So I was always involved with school groups, kind of home schooling groups.
00:02:20 And - it was lovely to watch her grow, and it was also fantastic with other like-minded mothers, who were bringing up their children very similar to me. And I think our ethos was - teaching our children how to live. Not living to work, but learning how to live.
00:02:50 I think the most difficult thing in this journey for me, has been trying to juggle, at the very beginning, a full-time job with studying. I've had to do a lot of night classes, which isn't easy. Sometime it's been quite difficult to - after a day's work, to go out to night school. But my tutors have always been very supportive. I've been very, very lucky in that, you know, I've received the support I've really needed, and the encouragement I've really needed. And a turning point came - I mean I've been studying a long time, with other holistic therapies, to actually help me achieve my - my aim, that's to become a Homeopath -
00:03:32 was when I got my first Distinction, for the work I'd done. And I was really happy with that. Because coming from school with just a few, you know, just a handful of qualifications that didn't really mean very much to me at the time, I kind of felt really good about that. That my hard work had kind of paid off. It kind of gave me the impetus really to carry on.
