00:02 My name’s Nick McKenna, and I’m a graduate management trainee with Baxter Storey.

00:07 I found out about this position through my father who is also in catering, and I just finished my degree, I was coming up to finishing it and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and, I’d worked in catering on and off when I was a teenager and I decided I wanted to give catering a go.

00:28 Secondary school I, I enjoyed the first part of it, and then I got to sixth form and I felt they were telling us to act like adults but we did, weren’t getting treated like adults, which I did my AS’s and then I went on to college and I realised that’s more of what I had an idea of what people should be doing they were saying you have to act like adults and they were treating us like adults which is, you know the way I should think it should be.

00:56 When I was at school I wanted to work in something to do with music, I started at a young age from about six years old, playing musical instruments and, I did GCSE music AS and, music technology but by the time I did music technology I was 16, 17 I decided it was more of a hobby rather a career choice for me and hence why I went into business studies.

01:26 Musical instrument I play are guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, piano, harmonica, and drums. When you’re playing musical instruments with other people arguments happen and it was just petty arguments and I didn’t enjoy that at all.

01:48 I went into business 'cos I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, for the future, so I thought it would’ve been a good degree to go and have if I wanted to go into well, anything really.

02:00 My father set up Cater Link which is contract catering but it looks after schools and hospices, and I just grew up working on and off for, in catering, and I never thought as a child that it was what I wanted to do for my future, I just happened to come round when I got older.

02:22 I suppose it was just I looked back at those times when I worked in catering and I didn’t have any you know sad moments there, it was all enjoyable, all, my memories of working in catering, whereas I had worked in different parts of music and not all of those were enjoyable. So, that’s kind of helped me lean towards the catering side of things.

02:48 What I know now I probably would have gone for something a bit more catering based because although the business studies degree has helped me with certain aspects of contract catering there’s other aspects that you know I’m, I was behind on and still am behind on but you know I have to carry on catching up.

03:08 Well working in contract catering is for me I can see that in the foreseeable future working in contract catering. Maybe there’s you know a chance for me to move into other areas of catering but for now I’m very happy in contract catering.

03:25 Maybe going to university and just realising I think it was the third year, not the first and second year having a great time, still getting the right grades and everything, but the third year you start waking up and go OK I’ve got one more year of this, but this is a serious year and this was where points count and then you kind of wake up and then realise you’ve gotta grow up and actually decide what you want to do for the rest of your life, so I think, probably my last year of university was a big turning point for me.

Nick is an avid musician, and thought he might pursue a career in that field, but came to realise that his music was more of a hobby so completed a degree in Business at university and joined BaxterStorey.
