Our apprenticeships are about more than just the technical skills to become a highly qualified gas engineer, an Engineering Technician or one of our Software Developers; we also build into the programme a range of leadership development modules. Training is provided in house at one of our offices or for our engineering roles at one of our on-site award-wining training academies. And for some of the roles you will also commit to completing the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award .

We offer many different apprenticeships in Centrica and British Gas:

British Gas Service and Repair and Central Heating Installations apprenticeships

The minimum age for an apprenticeship is 16 years old and there is no maximum age. To apply for an apprenticeship you need to have obtained 4 GCSE’s grade C or above, or an equivalent such as an NVQ/SNVQ Level 2.

British Gas IS (Information Systems) apprenticeships

Where you can learn from experts with experience and pick up skills you simply would not get in the classroom. It’s a 2 year scheme and you will gain an Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3).

You need 5 GCSE’s including Maths and English and preferable ICT. Applications generally open in March and these roles are based in Staines.

Centrica Powers Generation apprenticeships

This modern apprentice programme is a 4 year programme developing Engineering Technicians for our Power Generation Business. Throughout the programme we will support you to develop an increasing theoretical and practical knowledge that you can demonstrate on an everyday basis.

You should have or expect to gain GCSE (or equivalent) A to C in Maths, English and Science (double or triple award), and two other subjects. Technical experience or technical/vocational qualifications would be an advantage but are not essential.


British Gas Traineeships

All of out trainees undertake a comprehensive programme of training .This includes training on-site in one of our award-wining training academies as well as on-the-job coaching with qualified engineers. We offer traineeships in Smart Metering and Electrician roles.

The minimum age for a traineeship is 17 years old and there is no maximum age. To apply for traineeship you need to have a driving licence (with 6 points or less) and also have some customer service experience.

British Gas Trainee Smart Energy Expert

British Gas leads the way in energy efficient products such as smart meters that help our customers control their energy usage, save money and reduce their carbon footprint. Installing gas and electric smart meters is just one part of the job and our accredited training programme will equip you with all the technical knowledge you will need, providing you with Gas Safe Register and NICEIC accreditations.

You will need strong communication skills and be a good listener; eager to understand our customer’s individual situations and identify the solutions that best meet their needs. Most importantly you will have a passion for delivering excellent customer service.

British Gas Trainee Electrical Field Engineer (white goods)

Our white goods electrical field engineers carry our repairs to white goods and kitchen appliances, domestic electrical installations maintenance and annual basic inspections on customer’s electrical appliances and domestic electrical installations.

British Gas Trainee Electrical Field Engineer (electrician)

Our electrical field engineers carry out the installation of domestic electrical equipment and maintain equipment and undertake annual basic inspections on customer’s domestic electrical installations. They also work closely with our New Energy Solar PV Technicians.
