Behind the scenes with

Stuart Fraser – Project Director

Within construction there’s a multitude of tasks and activities, not only across the trade but also across the sort of disciplines around a you know project management, design, supervision and engineering and accounting and quantity surveying there’s a real mass of opportunity within our industry.

It’s very much a people business and it’s about working with people building teams, working as part of teams and, really adding something to that team. It starts with apprentices, we’ve all been young, we’ve all had to start work, we’ve all had to leave school and get jobs or go to university or whatever so. We have a big focus on young people particularly.

Zavier  – Apprentice

My experience as an apprentice has been pretty sweet, I mean I’ve come on leaps and bounds, since I first started. It consists of me learning how to use a station, how to read drawings, how to communicate with the project management team and such.

Jason – Apprentice

It helped me find a job first of all. Keeps me occupied during the week, gets you money weekly.

Craig – Apprentice

Out there it’s not easy just to get a job like that. So it’s a good thing of getting qualifications and getting paid at the same time.

Vivienne – Apprentice

Initially I didn’t really like construction company, because I thought it was one of them plumber, I’ve gone, euch, oh no! I can’t do that. But when I came into Balfour Beatty I saw that there were different roles you could do, so I came in and I got lots of experience and I would like to make my career, build up my career and do some organisation.

Chris Hearne – Package Manager

There’s a wide range of projects and trades that you can do and there is the opportunity within the company to transfer from one area to another if you wanted to specialise in certain types of jobs or even if you wanted to focus on more of a regional side of things.

My job title at the moment is a trainee engineer, on site. And basically what that consists of is, I go out onto site and stake out according to the coordinates given to me by a surveyor and such the like and then the builders can work to it.

My job entails some spread sheets, booking in deliveries, vehicles, and making up signs.

My job title is a ground works apprenticeship.

Oh different roles, the role that I’m doing is drainage so levelling the ground, laying the pipes.

Chris Hearne

No days are the same, it’s a great variety, you’re not stuck at a desk all day.

The safety as well, the health and safety around the work area is good, because they keep you safe all the time.

Yeah so the cold nights are hard, it’s advisable to have a decent thermal to get you through it, but besides that it’s not too bad.

Stuart Fraser

Electrician apprentice when he starts won’t know a lot about electricity and the carpenter won’t know much about carpentry. So, we’re not really looking for any vocational skills so much as we’re looking for really characteristics about people. We’re looking for their attitude, for their behaviours, for their enthusiasm, and they’re willingness to sort of you know learn and be part of a programme that will help them in the future.

Chris Hearne

If you get offered these schemes take them, grab them with both hands and fully maximise them, because I’ve seen the difference it can make to people who’ve gone through a mentoring scheme and apprenticeship and you do come out a much more rounded individual afterwards than when you start the scheme.

Since I’ve been here, it’s been an, it’s a nice company and I’ve been enjoying it as well.

Chris Hearne

I was at the Invictus Games a couple of weeks ago, and I was on the south lawn watching the closing ceremony and over my left hand shoulder I had the aquatic centre where I’d sent the last four years over the right hand shoulder I had the Olympic stadium where I’m working now. And it was just, it was a strange feeling that I can’t describe and I don’t think you’ll ever get again. It’s just a, yeah a really, it was a proud moment that one.

Stuart Fraser

This is a world class venue and it’s going to be around a long, long time so it’s important that we bring the best of Balfour Beatty to bear in delivering this job.
