What does volunteering for the Army Cadet Force involve?
The cadets meet one or two evenings a week with occasional weekend activities. During this time we cover a range of things from kit inspection to first aid lessons and field training exercises, such as camouflage or teaching cadets how to move both as individuals and as members of a section in the field.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
The opportunity to be active and learn about the outdoors. I really enjoy these aspects of my role, although being vertically challenged means I do have to work a little harder sometimes!

What makes you suited to your role?
Real enthusiasm and commitment – it’s important to be able to rise to a challenge and be adventurous. I also enjoy helping young people by combining my roles of mother and mentor.

How did you get into volunteering in the Army Cadet Force?
I joined as an adult volunteer after my eldest son became a cadet, as a result of hearing about all the fun he was having and everything he was learning. Many volunteers, like me, join with no previous military background at all, and the skills I’ve acquired through working in the ACF have benefited my professional life too.

What do you like doing outside of work?
I’m not just an ACF volunteer; working full-time and being a single mum to two teenage boys can be a challenge, but I’ve always managed to maintain balance without giving up my own commitments. I’m also the proud owner of three dogs, so they keep me very busy!

Any future career plans?
I’d love to further develop my career and become an outreach worker in the future. Going forward, it would also be good to be able to do more adventurous outdoor training as this is something I really enjoy.
