Description

Human resource managers and directors plan, organise and direct the personnel, training and industrial relations policies of organisations, advise on resource allocation and utilisation problems, measure the effectiveness of an organisation’s systems, methods and procedures and advise on, plan and implement procedures to improve utilisation of labour, equipment and materials.

Qualifications

There are no pre-set entry standards, although entry is most common with a degree or equivalent qualification. Off- and on-the-job training is provided and professional qualifications are available. NVQs/SVQs in relevant subjects are available at levels 3, 4 and 5.

Tasks

  • Determines staffing needs;
  • Oversees the preparation of job descriptions, drafts advertisements and interviews candidates;
  • Oversees the monitoring of employee performance and career development needs;
  • Provides or arranges for provision of training courses;
  • Undertakes industrial relations negotiations with employees’ representatives or trades unions;
  • Develops and administers salary, health and safety and promotion policies;
  • Examines and reports on company and departmental structures, chains of command, information flows, etc. and evaluates efficiency of existing operations;
  • Considers alternative work procedures to improve productivity;
  • Stays abreast of relevant legislation, considers its impact on the organisation’s HR strategy and recommends appropriate action.

  Melanie S – GLL My name’s Melanie S and I’m the employee brand manager for GLL. My job involves looking at everything to do with employment and recruitment in the company, so looking at who our target audience is, who we want to work for us, how we speak to them, how we let htem know that there are jobs available and how to help them through that application process, as well as helping the people that we work with as well as helpign with recruitment we’re also being able to put back into the community to really make kind of that active lifestyle open to everyone. It’s a social enterprise. It’s a charitable social enterprise so as cheesy as that sounds it really is kind of putting something back. If you remember how you feel when you got offered your first job it’s the most exciting thing in the whole world and that’s what I want to get over to everybody that either applies to us or works for us in our recruitment department, because you know a job affects everything from where you live to the holidays you take, the friends that you have, it’s just so important that you know I think it needs to be a briliant experience for everyone that goes through that recruitment process. Definitely be passionate, youv’e got to really love what you do or what you want to be able to do. Make as many contacts as you can, try and do work experience, make contact with the companies that you want to work for. Learn as much about them as you possibly can and just really show them how much you desperately want the job and how much you know you love what you do. I’d say try and get work expereince, even if it’s voluntary work, you know kind of help out in your local community, you know kind of anything from babysitting to a Saturday job to voluntary work, you know your local animal shelter, anything that kind of puts you in front of people to kind of really develop your customer service skills. Always look smart, always, attention to detail is key. They will notice everything from if you have clean hair, clean shoes, just look presentatble and you know really make an effort so that your appearance also will show your employers that you’re really keen to get it and you’ve really tried hard. Always be polite, smile, make eye contact but also what’s really important is to do lots of research before you join so look at the company website, go into centres that you know you want to work at, speak to people that work there ask them what it’s like, working, you know ask them for tips as to you know what makes a good GLL person. Learn how to look relaxed but you’ll still probably feel absolutely terrified inside, but it just shows that you care.   End of Melanie S
