00:00:06:01 – 00:00:06:19
I’m James.

00:00:06:19 – 00:00:11:21
I work for Vestey Foods International as a commercial manager,

00:00:11:23 – 00:00:13:10
based in Runcorn in Cheshire.

00:00:18:08 – 00:00:19:23
As a commercial manager,

00:00:19:23 – 00:00:24:14
I will buy product and sell product.

00:00:24:16 – 00:00:28:09
Breaking that down, I will speak to my supplier.

00:00:28:11 – 00:00:30:22
I will see what they might have available.

00:00:30:22 – 00:00:34:04
Let’s take for example, frozen chicken drumsticks.

00:00:34:06 – 00:00:37:18
I’ll buy a container of that – I will

00:00:37:18 – 00:00:41:19
then look to find a market for that product.

00:00:41:21 – 00:00:45:15
That market might be South Africa. On the sales side,

00:00:45:15 – 00:00:48:16
I will speak to my customer in

00:00:48:16 – 00:00:52:13
maybe South Africa or Ghana

00:00:52:15 – 00:00:55:19
and try and work out what their demands might be

00:00:56:00 – 00:01:00:08
and then try and find that product for them from the suppliers.

00:01:00:10 – 00:01:06:00
And on top of that we have certain exhibitions we will attend –

00:01:06:02 – 00:01:06:11
It might be

00:01:06:11 – 00:01:09:11
Germany, it might be Dubai, it might be China –

00:01:09:15 – 00:01:13:20
to basically exhibit our company

00:01:13:24 – 00:01:18:09
and the products and services that we provide.

00:01:18:11 – 00:01:24:07
The best part of my job is meeting people,

00:01:24:09 – 00:01:26:21
talking to people.

00:01:26:21 – 00:01:28:04
Each day is different

00:01:28:04 – 00:01:32:09
and if I’m honest, I don’t think there’s really a bad part about it.

00:01:32:11 – 00:01:33:22
There’s difficult parts.

00:01:33:22 – 00:01:39:16
I do work away a lot, which is hard when you’ve got a young family,

00:01:39:18 – 00:01:42:17
but they’ve grown up with it as well and understand

00:01:42:17 – 00:01:43:22
it’s Dad’s job.

00:01:48:02 – 00:01:49:14
School was great.

00:01:49:14 – 00:01:51:09
I really enjoyed it.

00:01:51:09 – 00:01:54:09
I enjoyed the social side of it.

00:01:54:15 – 00:01:58:02
Academically, I wasn’t the strongest.

00:01:58:04 – 00:02:04:06
I then progressed to A-levels because that was the right thing to do at the time

00:02:04:08 – 00:02:06:01
but didn’t go to university.

00:02:06:01 – 00:02:12:06
The A-levels I did were business studies, history and German.

00:02:12:08 – 00:02:14:05
But looking back, I look back at school fondly.

00:02:14:05 – 00:02:17:10
I wish I probably could have stayed there longer.

00:02:21:20 – 00:02:23:04
Skills and strengths that are

00:02:23:04 – 00:02:27:18
useful in my job would be

00:02:27:20 – 00:02:29:16
certainly maths.

00:02:29:16 – 00:02:33:07
Working out percentages and profit margins,

00:02:33:09 – 00:02:38:16
cost prices, adding the freight, using different currencies.

00:02:38:18 – 00:02:41:18
A language would help. Communication.

00:02:41:22 – 00:02:43:16
English,

00:02:43:16 – 00:02:45:16
being able to write obviously

00:02:45:16 – 00:02:49:14
in a correct, professional way, which links in

00:02:49:16 – 00:02:51:16
probably with business studies too.

00:02:55:17 – 00:02:58:01
During my A-levels, I started to work for McDonald’s.

00:02:58:01 – 00:03:00:17
and I loved my time at McDonald’s. It was great.

00:03:00:17 – 00:03:04:20
The teamwork, the camaraderie, the training you get is fantastic.

00:03:05:01 – 00:03:08:01
I decided to leave there though

00:03:08:04 – 00:03:12:19
and then worked at Burtons menswear.

00:03:12:21 – 00:03:16:23
I worked for a nightclub as a bar manager and a cleaner. I started

00:03:16:23 – 00:03:19:23
working as a sales

00:03:20:00 – 00:03:24:23
rep for a local poultry producer.

00:03:25:00 – 00:03:28:00
Stayed there two years,

00:03:28:06 – 00:03:30:06
got approached by a different company

00:03:30:06 – 00:03:34:07
to go and work for them as a frozen meat and poultry trader,

00:03:34:09 – 00:03:37:09
and was there ten years before I joined Vestey.

00:03:41:14 – 00:03:43:06
It’s okay to change your mind.

00:03:43:06 – 00:03:44:18
Just ask the advice of somebody.

00:03:44:18 – 00:03:49:04
Just speak to somebody that is in a role

00:03:49:04 – 00:03:52:04
that might interest you or

00:03:52:07 – 00:03:56:24
ask what are the possibilities, what the requirements to do this job

00:03:56:24 – 00:03:59:11
or where could it lead?

“I don’t think there’s really a bad part about it.” James had a range of jobs after his A-levels but it was a job with a local poultry producer which set him on the path to his current role. He gets to travel the world and meet lots of people – exhibiting the company and buying and selling meat – a job he really enjoys.
