Billy F

00:00:03 My name is Billy F and I’m doing a web developer in Realtime Worlds.

00:00:09 Well basically I’m just making the intranet for the company which is management tools for the company staff. So for example we have an internal forum for company staff who, they could post any events or selling some things on that forum, and also we have a, tools for company staff to clock in and clock out and also some other management tools.

00:00:46 I come from Beijing China and my education is nothing related with computing. At that time my dad was working as a programmer and sometimes I just went to his office and he tried to teach me the programme, the language of Basic, but I just see boring. I just like to play games.

00:01:12 I was too young when I came into the university so I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I just told my parents, well you chose something for me I will just do it. My parents just chose a transportation course.

00:01:29 After four years university study I finally realised that I don’t like transportation at all. I like computing. So I wanted to do a computing course so I come to UK.

00:01:45 I play computer games all day and all night and then I started having interest with computing itself. University of Dundee provided a course which is a transfer course for the people who doesn’t have any computing background, so we could study computing here.

00:02:08 When I just came to UK I feel very lonely, so I found it’s hard to find Chinese people from the street so think, maybe I could make a website for all the Chinese people in Dundee to communicate with each other and so I just created that website with a few of my friends, then this gave me the experience on web developing and then after I have finished my second Master degree I sent my CV to Realtime Worlds which actually was about IT Support. And luckily Colin Macdonald interviewed me and with offer of web development I think maybe because I have done the website for the Chinese people in Dundee and I have done a lot of administration work for that website.

00:03:18 The name of the website was called I Dundee. The sound of I in Chinese is love, so it means we love Dundee. That website was created with the open source forum programme and the technology it used was ASP and Access Database was very simple at the time we had a few hundreds of users and 20,000 posts on the forum, but now everything gone.

00:03:55 This job gave me the chance to learn things to learn what I’m gonna use in the future and so I’m gonna stay here for probably long time until I got nothing to learn.

00:04:13 END

Billy F is a Web developer for Realtime Worlds. He got the job because he made his own successful website for the Chinese Community in Dundee. He came to the UK with a Master’s degree in Transport but as he says “I play computer games all day and all night and then I started having interest with computing itself.”
